2008 - New Reading & Discussion Series: Let's Talk About It!
REMEMBER EVERYTHING: THE IMPORTANCE OF HERITAGE IN SOUTH CAROLINA LITERATURE

A new reading and discussion book series entitled “Remember Everything: The Importance of Heritage in South Carolina Literature” will be held at the Colleton County Memorial Library beginning in January 2008. Copies of the books for the series may be picked up at the circulation desk in the library. The program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Colleton County Memorial Library and is funded in part by the South Carolina Humanities Council, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities; inspiring, engaging and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature, history, culture and heritage.

Dates, titles, and scholars for the series are:

Monday, January 14 at 6 p.m. – Rich in Love by Josephine Humphreys, Scholar: Dr. Rosemary Reisman, retired college professor.

Monday, January 28 at 6 p.m. – Down by the Riverside by Charles Joyner, Scholar: Janis Blocker, Colleton County educator

Tuesday, February 12 at 6 p.m. - Secret & Sacred: The Diaries of James Henry Hammond, edited by Carol Bleser, Scholar: Dr. Ron Cox, Associate Professor of History, Assoc. Dean for Academic & Student Affairs, USC/Lancaster

Monday, February 26 at 6:00 p.m. – The Great Santini by Pat Conroy, Scholar: Dr. Ellen Malphrus, Assoc. Professor, USC/Beaufort

Monday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. – Red Hills and Cotton by Ben Robertson, Scholar: Dot Jackson, award winning author and relative of Ben Robertson

Photography Show by Edisto's Susan Roberts during September

The Colleton County Memorial Library and The Colleton Museum are co-sponsoring a photographic exhibit by noted Edisto Island photographer, Susan Roberts. The exhibit, entitled “South Carolina in Color and Light” will be on display at the Museum during the month of August and at the library during the month of September. Along with the exhibit which is free and open to the public, there will be a public reception held for Roberts on Wednesday, September 5 at 6 PM at the library.

Booksigning and Book Talk - Monday, August 20, 2007 at 6 PM

Dr. John Griffin will speak at the library about his new book, Lt. Bill Farrow: Doolittle Raider. Lt. Bill Farrow, a native of Darlington, SC, and the pilot of a B-25 bomber, volunteered for Gen. Jimmy Doolittle’s famous Raid On Tokyo on April 28, 1942, a near suicide mission. The day following that raid the Japanese captured Farrow and his crew. Following six months of starvation & the most horrible tortures that one could imagine, Farrow was taken to a deserted cemetery and brutally executed by the Japanese.
Through it all, Lt. Farrow’s faith never wavered. Today, after more than half a century, he remains an inspiration.
The program is free and open to the public.

CHILDREN'S SUMMER READING PROGRAM!
Below is information on our Summer Reading Program for children. The kick-off party on Tuesday, June 5, at 10:00 a.m. is on the lawn of the library so make sure to bring lawn chairs, blankets, etc. to sit on. Check our library calendar soon for specific events for children to take place during the Summer Reading Program.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM TO BEGIN JUNE 5!

The Colleton County Memorial Library will again host its annual children's summer reading program with a kick-off party at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 5, 2007. The party will feature Anna Pridgen, Puppeteer. The program is free and the public is invited.

The theme for this year's program is "Get A Clue" and is sponsored by the library, the Friends of the Colleton County Memorial Library, and the Coastal Community Foundation of SC/Beaufort Fund. Children can register at the main library in Walterboro, on the Bookmobile, and at the Edisto Beach branch library. Participants will have the opportunity to win prizes and awards by reading books, attending programs, and participating in literary contests.

The reading program will continue through August, 4, 2007, with an assortment of storytimes, children's programming, and other special events. The Grand Finale with awards and a talent show will take place on Saturday, August 4, at 10:00 AM.

  Join two successful Carolina writers of African-American Fiction. Colleton County’s own, Niobia Simone Bryant, is a best-selling and award winning author who recently was nominated for a 2006 African-American Literary Awards Show Open Book Award. A writer of both romance & mainstream fiction, she has 10 short stories and 8 romance novels in print. Niobia is a graduate of Seton Hall University and is a full-time writer.
  
  
  Author AlTonya Washington, a SC native, is a graduate of Winston Salem State University in NC. Since releasing her first contemporary romance with BET Books in 2003, she has garnered a number of awards which include: Best First Multicultural Romance by Romantic Times Magazine & Reviewer’s Choice Award for Best Multicultural Romance. She released her eighth novel in August 2006 entitled In the Midst of Passion with Dafina Books

Meet a local SC author & hear about some great summer reads!

Work of artist, “Saint” to be on display in the library for Black History Month

The library is quite pleased to announce that the artist, “Saint”, will be sharing his artwork at the library during the month of February.
James "Saint" St. Clair hails from New Jersey and later moved to Washington DC. However, he is proud to claim roots in South Carolina and now lives and works in the Palmetto State.
Saint used every opportunity to study art while living in Washington DC, developing his own style drawn from the African American experience he calls "creative realism." His colorful paintings have a touch of fantasy and are almost surreal. He is currently enjoying a growing reputation as one of our artists to watch, with works increasingly in demand. His art is in many galleries throughout the state and the library is fortunate to be able to share his work with the public.
